Ivory carving

During his first visit to Alaska in 1941, he worked at the Alaska Shop, a shop was was predominatly a drug store, but which also sold books, 78 RPm records and also encouraged local artists by showing their work for sale. Dad carved a “Glacier Eagle”, a creature of local lore, holding an “ice worm” also part of local lore. This image is a post card so a tourist didn’t need to buy the actual item. Ivory is very hard and fine grained, making it perfect for carving, one a person learns the technique of carving and polishing.  He also carved pieces of jewelry for mom, brooches, and earrings.
Here’s a photo from a 1949 Salt Lake City newspaper article showing more of his jewelry work:
As a side note, it is interesting that the large ivory carving on the left includes the motif of the cross. I don’t understand what his relationship was to the cross, but appeared in several of his creations.
