Block Printing

“Jensen’s Exclusive Originals HandPainted”

was the name these two gave to the to dress making business they formed around 1944 in Vernal.  Marie was a superb dress maker and could create a dress for any woman of any pattern the woman would choose, without using a printed pattern. She and Jim decided that his block printing skills could be joined with her dress-making skills to tap into the pocket books of the wives of local professionals. These dresses were both made by the two of them. Their success earned local celebrity such that the big city papers in SLC featured them, as did the local high-class department store which had them put on an exhibit and show.

This green block on the right above was used to create custom dress labels The orignal, of course, is reversed. It was switched so you could read it. Here are two examples of the blocks that he created for this purpose.

This is a print of a hibiscus made on paper. He made this before he went to Seward in 1950, and I found it later.  I took it and cut this shape out and mailed it to him with other things I made because I was homesick for him. This gave me a connection to him.

The pale violet sheet was a taro plant block that he made while in Hawaii.
