His story is that he pestered his dad about buying a mail order taxidermy course. His dad finally gave in -because he was interested I’d say- and sent $1000 for the course. The two of them studied together and harvested spare pigeons from the flocks that hung around the farm. Dad contemplated skinning a cat -a hilarious story which you can read at this address near the end of the article <http://uphillbothways.org/Section_3.pdf>- but gave up the idea. This was actually the start of the preparation that led dad into paleontology. Because this particular skill was the one that he used to help Arnie Lewis at the Field House in Vernal before Arnie went to Harvard. Then years later when Arnie needed a new preparator, he knew about dad and called him and the rest is history. I found an old letter in which he explained how he learned taxidermy. He took the correspondence course in 1932-34, with his dad, from the Northwestern School of Taxidermy. Of course,I should have saved and scanned that letter so that it could have been inserted here....
