Alaska Sportsman

Dad had an article published in the “Alaska Sportsman” magazine in 1954 about a  hunting trip he went on with Tom Aldous. Tom and Henrietta were good friends of our family and we spent a fair amount of time with them.
                                                                                                                                         .

There are two funny things about this article. First, the hunt that that dad and Tom went on was for spruce hens. One thing led to another and they  ended up bringing a goat back.  Here’s a photo of the goat attended by Dick (left) and me. It was strung up at Tom’s place because he had some trees.  It was a good sized goat as goats go. So instead of birds they brought home some goat meat for the locker.Mom knew how to cook wild game so that it tasted good, having grown up in a household where venison supplemented the frugal diet of her family.
The other funny thing about this article is what the editor did to the title.  Dad entitled the manuscript “Orcamnos, Old Man of the Crags”. Perhaps that wasn’t a particularly inspirational title. For whatever reason, the editor cited “editorial policy” and changed the name to “Tough Guy with Side Burns”!! Go figure. Which is more weird? I wonder what the policy was that would entitle an article about goat huntin in snow something stupid like that.  I believe that dad did have a second article published but since I cant find any documents in his things to show that happened, i hvae to conclude that my memory is defective. He would have saved information about a second article with this information
